Start with something useful

Weather

Hourly and daily forecasts at seven named locations, from the Dry Tortugas to mainland Monroe.

Temperature, rain chance and conditions. Forecasts, not local sensors.

Alerts

Active official messages for the Keys, mainland Monroe and surrounding forecast waters.

Severity, affected zones, dates and instructions. These zones can extend beyond the county.

Tides & water levels

Predicted high and low tides, alongside the latest measured level at Key West and Vaca Key.

Separate predictions and observations. A tide prediction is not a flood forecast.

Communities

Population estimates for Monroe's five incorporated municipalities, with their margins of error.

Census 2020–2024 survey estimates. These are not counts of people here today.

Dates, missing data and failures

A source issue time describes the forecast. An observation time describes a measurement. The API's check time describes when it retrieved that source. A cached response keeps those dates; requesting it again does not make the data newer.

A missing number is null, not zero. An empty, successful alerts response means no active messages were returned for the covered zones. An unavailable response means we could not establish that. Partial responses identify which part could not be supplied.

All tide times are UTC and levels are in feet relative to Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW), the station's low-tide reference. Observations may be preliminary. Do not compare a level with an elevation using a different reference.

Access, caching and fair use

Use GET to read, HEAD for response headers and OPTIONS for browser access. Cross-origin reads are allowed. Only the listed paths and locations are supported; query parameters and write requests are rejected.

Cache responses in your application. Check forecasts no more than every 15 minutes, alerts every minute, and tides every five minutes. Census estimates belong to a dated edition and do not need frequent polling. Honor Retry-After on failures and back off when a request fails.

Shared edge caches, fixed routes, request timeouts and response limits keep this service small. There is no guaranteed availability or dedicated capacity. Heavy or abusive traffic may be restricted. No account or paid plan is required.

This product uses U.S. Census Bureau data but is not endorsed or certified by the Census Bureau. Keep the estimate period and margin of error with a Census number.

This API covers the datasets listed here. Map imagery, third-party tiles, vessel and aircraft positions, individual records and other atlas layers are not included in this reuse offer.

Alerts and connected devices

Use these readings as an input to your own system, with age checks, a manual override and a safe response to missing data. A forecast covers an area; it cannot tell you whether a specific garden is wet. This beta is not an emergency notification service, a navigation instrument or an unattended control system.

For urgent conditions, follow official National Weather Service Key West and local emergency information. The API provides data, not commands to an irrigation controller or other device.
